SUMMARY: The Rende Progress Capital (RPC) Business Development Director for Opportunity is responsible for developing Excluded Entrepreneurs for business technical assistance/pre-loan readiness services and cultivating them as potential customers for RPC loans and investments. Excluded Entrepreneurs are African-Americans, Latinos/as, Asians, Native Americans and Immigrants who face barriers to conventional lending due to racial bias.

As a business development director for a mission-oriented lender using racial equity values and culturally competency standards, the position has three responsibility areas critical to RPC customer business development; the director has authority over customer cultivation and customer success development. The director reports to the RPC Managing Director and Portfolio Manager and is directly responsible for the development, execution and management of strategies, activities and partnerships to grow the RPC pipeline of potential customers.

Customer Cultivation
Responsible for activities and strategies to identify, cultivate and prepare Excluded Entrepreneurs in local Michigan markets and communities who are disinvested from traditional lending but may be candidates for RPC loans to help expand their businesses, eliminate the racial wealth gap.
The director will self-direct their work and activities directly with Excluded Entrepreneurs and/or organizations and other RPC staff for the following:
  1. Identification and development of future customer borrowers through community knowledge, collection and comparison of data on target markets to guide the director and lending staff’s outreach plans to target markets.
  2. Planning and self-direction of meetings, activities and external relations to engage with potential RPC customers and other organizations to develop RPC customer pipeline relationships.
  3. Assisting lending staff by conducting informal screening of potential clients, marketing RPC services to Excluded Entrepreneurs via a variety of methods as well as conduct assessments of organizations for RPC to partner with for referrals and pipelining of customers that can be recommended and considered for loans and equity investments.
Customer Success Development
As some Excluded Entrepreneurs may require business technical assistance services such as mentoring and coaching in order to increase the likelihood of being eligible for RPC loans, the director’s additional duties in ensuring loan/investment customer success includes the following:
  1. Direct one-on-one---as well as management of--- internal and external business technical assistance coaching sessions, classes and activities to RPC borrowers and potential borrowers.
  2. Provide coaching or will identify, secure and manage RPC volunteer and contractual business coaches (and their coaching events and activities) to help potential borrowers to be ‘business and loan ready’ and help provide coaching to borrowers that will continue their chances for success.
Business Technical Assistance Funding Acquisition
In order to continue and expand RPC business technical assistance services to Excluded Entrepreneurs, the director will be asked to assist RPC in maintaining and securing funding to underwrite business technical assistance sessions, classes, coaching stipends, etc. Therefore, additional duties for this area of responsibility includes the following:
  1. Partially responsible for working with RPC Executive Management to identify and acquire continued business technical assistance funding that will assist RPC applicants and approved borrowers to receive guidance and assistance in improving their business operations required for loan approval.

  • An ideal candidate will have 4-6 years of experience in sales, business development, marketing/communications, human resources or external affairs. The candidate would possess the skills business closing, motivation for sales, prospecting, sales planning, market/territory management, market knowledge and personal/technical presentation Skills.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and ability to work with diverse professionals and cultures are a plus given the mission of RPC. Spanish verbal and speaking skills are encouraged.
  • Must have knowledge of basic PC skills required, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Power Point.
